New Etsy Store – A Slight Detour From the Usual Writing Stuff

So, while I find myself unemployed still (a frustrating rant for another day), I’ve been working hard to do more writing, get my life squared away and back on track, and make positive moves toward a future that will make me happy. Since I only sporadically go out with friends, I often fill my brain and whatever of my free time is left on crafts either for around the house (I believe function is as important as form) or for miniatures for dollhouses and room boxes, a love I’ve had for over a decade.

Other than a few “haunted” dollhouses I could find on the web, there wasn’t much available in miniatures that I felt really married my love of horror and creepy stuff with my love of miniatures. so I started making my own. I have a room box featuring the golden crown from Innsmouth, the Cthulhu idol from “Call of Cthulhu” (admittedly, I bought this from this cool lady here but have since begun making my own). I have miniature books like the Necronomicon, the Cultes des Ghoules, the De Vermis Mysteriis, and the Unaussprechlichen Kulten, as well as miniatures of all Sutter Cane’s books, and even one of my own (Thrall) which is considered by some to be in the tradition of the Cthulhu Mythos. I have tentacles cracking through doors, I have tiny Ouija boards, I have miniature degrees from Miskatonic University, and an assortment of runic tablets offering pieces of the mysteries of the universe. I’m also working on a haunted asylum. And that’s just the miniatures.

For the home, I have also made a slew of pillows with beautiful fabrics I’ve picked up here and there. I’ve made home decor for the kitchen, bedroom, and living room. I’ve made wine charms and a box to keep them in. I’ve made cake stands and coasters and shelving, picture frames, weekly menu boards, storage/organization boxes, candle holders, and wreaths. I’m even working on a side table with my father. I’ve recycled, repurposed, reused, and recreated because it keeps the creative juices flowing, giving me a sense of having created something both beautiful and useful to me, and also, it makes me feel I’m contributing to the efficiency of my daily life (form AND function). And if you happen to follow me on Twitter, you’ve probably seen pictures here and there of my efforts.

All this to announce that, in order to bring some extra money in while I’m not working full-time, and to hold me over in between checks for writing, I’ve decided to sell some of those creations, and have opened an Etsy store just for that purpose. Now mind you, I’m new to this, and so I started small, with stuff I know I can complete quickly and well, but I intend to expand once I finish some of these writing deadlines, adding things as I go if there’s interest. Mostly, the focus of the store is on creepy stuff you likely can’t find too many places, if anywhere else — little home decor things and horror-themed miniatures.

If you’re looking for a gift for you or someone else and think maybe something like what I’m selling might be the right thing for you, then please check out the store. Some of the items can be customized. All of it is pretty low-priced, as such things go, and because it’s a reflection of another creative aspect of my personality, I do my best to make true quality items. This is not in lieu of writing — that’s my first love and first job — but in addition to it. I hope you enjoy at least browsing, and will spread the word to anyone you think might be interested in such things.

Thanks! πŸ™‚

Once more to be clear, the Etsy store is called Nightmaries (ha ha ha), and can be found HERE.

And this sort of exchange is why I’ll buy all of Mary’s books…

The difference between Mary and Nikita’s writing is simple: When I first read THE HOLLOWER, I wanted to give up writing because I couldn’t compare with her prose. When I first read Nikita, I wanted to give up my life because I lost all hope in humanity.

Mary, don’t you think you’re being a bit hard on Nick?

Sure, he did challenge you, saying he would go pro before you did. And yes, you made that first pro sale years ago while he still struggles to find ANYONE willing to pay even 1 cent a word for his writing. Okay, fine, you beat Nick fair and square.

But then you have to keep making pro sales, over and over again, and make Nick look like an out-of-shape runner, wheezing and struggling, trying to come within sight of the finish line while you continually lap him on the track. Then you let Fangoria, the biggest horror magazine in America, take you on an author tour. And to top it off, you wind up on Horror.com’s list of the Top 100 Horror Writers of all time.

Yes, you’re a better writer than Nick. Yes, you have lots of readers and fans and book sales. And yes, you have the admiration and respect of some of the biggest names in the business. But how much success do you really need? Don’t you think you’ve humiliated Nick Pacione enough?

Yeah, me neither. Keep kicking ass, and to hell with that greasy little fan-fic bastard.

  4. My apologies — I’ve had to delete a number of comments here because a certain very unbalanced individual has been stalking, harassing, libeling, and threatening me relentlessly lately, and was trying to use this post to further some idea that we have some kind of feud going on. We don’t. I don’t want to be bothered by his hate, his filthy sexual innuendo, his misogyny, or his utterly mistaken beliefs that I’m somehow out to destroy his career, the careers of people he publishes, the mentally ill/learning disabled, or whatever his issue is this week.

My deepest thanks to those who came here to my defense when he was spewing his hateful rants at me here. I do appreciate it; I kept what I could of the comments without giving him the fuel for his jealous, obsessive, and delusional fire that he seems to so desperately want.
